We are conducting a new research project which aims to reveal the neural
control of the emotional system by constructing a computational model that
integrates transdisciplinary studies over molecular-cellular-circuit
level with our tenure track and post-doc researchers of various
backgrounds including systems biology, bioinformatics, computational
biology, mathematical engineering, and machine learning. Our laboratory
also has a strong collaboration with other laboratories in Advanced
Telecommunications Research Institute International (ATR), RIKEN,
Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) and NYU, Langone
Medical Center. The successful candidates will work on analysis for
microscopic images of neurons and neural circuits or bioinformatics for
neural proteomic data with our collaborators.

Candidates should have a strong background in one or more of these areas:
-Image processing: image super-resolution, segmentation, object identification
-Bioinformatics: omics analysis, proteomics analysis, pathway analysis
-Statistical learning: large-scale data-driven learning, data mining

Due to rapid growth and the strategic importance of the discipline of bioengineering at Imperial College, the Department of Bioengineering wishes to appoint a number of individuals at Lecturer, Senior Lecturer or Reader grade.  This is an open call in which we are looking for outstanding candidates in any field of Bioengineering.  As the department is making multiple appointments for strategic reasons, applications from individuals working in one of the areas listed below are particularly welcomed:

Postdoc in Computational Neuroscience, the Shouval lab

A Postdoc Position in the Computational/Theoretical Neuroscience
The Shouval lab has an openings for a Postdoc in Theoretical/Computational  Neuroscience. This Postdoc will work on a collaborative project with the lab of Todd Sacktor to uncover the basis for the maintenance of long-term memory.
Learning and memory can last a lifetime, yet the molecular substrates that underlie this memory last for periods of time shorter by several orders of magnitude. This is a fundamental problem in Neuroscience,which was first explored by Francis Crick in 1984, and various solutions have been offered through the years. However, there is no commonly accepted theory, with significant experimental support, which can account for the persistence of memory. Our lab has been studying this question for several years, in collaboration with experimental groups. This Postdoc position is part of this ongoing effort.
The Postdoc hired will be involved in a collaborative project with the lab of Todd Sacktor in SUNY Downstate in NY. This Postdoc is funded by NIH grant: CRCNS: PKMzeta-dependent protein synthesis can account for the maintenance of synaptic plasticity.   The aim of this project is to explain how memories are maintained despite the molecular turnover and diffusion of their substrates. Work on this project will include detailed modeling at the molecular level of the biochemical networks that ensure the stability of memory. To carry out this project, mass action and stochastic models will be simulated as well as bifurcation analysis and analytical approximate solutions of the fixed points and the dynamics. Additionally more abstract aspects ofsuch a process will be examined, including its impact on memory storage andlearning at the cellular and circuit level.

We are seeking a Postdocs with a strong analytical and computational abilities and a background in Computational Neuroscience, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science or Engineering. Applicants with a background in dynamical systems, or chemical engineering are especially welcome. The salary will follow the NIH scale.

The Shouval lab focuses on modeling synaptic plasticity, and its impact on learning memory and cortical dynamics. The lab is located in the department of Neurobiology and Anatomy at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston. PhD position in computational neuroscience (Goethe University Frankfurt)

Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD position to work with Dr. Peter Jedlicka at Goethe-University Frankfurt in an NSF & BMBF funded US-Germany project aimed at understanding how chloride dynamics affect cerebellar computation. This project is in collaboration with Dr. Fidel Santamaria at The University of Texas at San Antonio and Dr. Thomas Kuner at Heidelberg University. The PhD student will be involved in the generation and implementation of computational models focusing on chloride-dependent changes in cerebellar inhibition. The student will be using computer simulations to reproduce/predict data from electrophysiology experiments on neurons expressing diverse fluorescent molecules that report chloride concentrations. Visits to US for short-term and long-term periods of time to learn techniques and exchange information are part of the activities of this grant. The successful candidate should have a background in physics, mathematics, engineering or computational neuroscience. Experience in scientific programming is highly desirable. The appointment will be starting in November/December 2012.

FMRI Data Analyst Job Announcement

Within the newly established Collaborative Research Center („Sonderforschungsbereich“ SFB 940) „Volition and Cognitive Control“ the Neuroimaging Center at the Department of Psychology in the Faculty of Mathematics und Natural Sciences seeks to appoint a

Data Analyst/ Research Scientist, Ph.D. (salary E13 TV-L, 100%)

with a strong background in advanced neuroimaging methods (especially functional connectivity)

The position is initially limited for 4 years.

Tasks: The Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) “Volition and Cognitive Control” (http://tu-dresden.de/die_tu_dresden/fakultaeten/fakultaet_mathematik_und_naturwissenschaften/fachrichtung_psychologie/sfbo) comprises 20 sub-projects and is funded by the German Science Foundation (DFG) for an initial period of four years with a budget of over 10 Mill. €. The overarching aim of the CRC is to combine expertise from experimental psychology, cognitive-affective neuroscience, clinical psychology, and psychiatry to investigate cognitive and neural mechanisms of volitional control as well as volitional dysfunctions in selected mental disorders. As a central component of SFB 940 a „Core Imaging Facility” (CIF) will be established which serves to support and inspire fMRI-based projects within the SFB 940. As part of the CIF team, we seek to appoint a specialist for the analysis of large-scale functional brain networks. This position is expected to be involved in a wide range of co-operations related to both implementing established functional connectivity methods as well as developing novel analytic methods. The Department of Psychology houses a neuroimaging center with a 3T Siemens Trio scanner exclusively dedicated to research. Besides an engagement in research projects we also expect the candidate to take an active role in training Ph.D. students on fMRI methods. Language for daily research communication will be English.

Profile: We seek to appoint a person with a strong background in computational neuroscience with profound mathematical knowledge who is highly experienced and skilled in the multivariate analysis of large-scale functional brain connectivity with in-depth expertise ideally in more than one analytical technique applied to fMRI data (DCM, ICA, SEM, GA, etc.).

The Basque Center on Cognition Brain and Language (San Sebastián, Basque Country, Spain) offers postdoctoral positions in several areas: language acquisition, production, multilingualism, neurodegeneration of language, language and learning disorders, neurocognition of language and advanced methods for cognitive neuroscience.

JOB OFFER –SUMMER IN ROME

The Department of Radiology at IRCCS Fondazione Santa Lucia, in Rome, Italy, has one open position for Early Stage Researcher (ESR) and one open position for Experienced Researcher (ER) in the EU Initial Training Network (ITN) Software for the Use of Multi-Modality Images in External Radiotherapy (SUMMER).


SUMMER unifies experts from radiotherapy, radiology, human computer interaction, image registration, segmentation and medical visualization from five European countries with the goal to train a multi-disciplinary team of ten young experts for the development of future radiotherapy applications. Summer schools, workshops and research stays at the other participating institutions will ensure a high level of knowledge transfer and collaborative research.

Fondazione Santa Lucia is a Scientific Institute for Research, Hospitalization and Health Care (IRCCS) in Rome, Italy, which carries out intensive research work in the fields of neuro-motor rehabilitation and, more generally, of neuroscience. The Department of Radiology studies structural and functional brain maturation in humans throughout life, in health and diseases with the aim of overcoming the segmented approach which is typical of conventional specialization training and scientific programs in order to transfer scientific research to the clinical activity. The Department of Radiology at FSL develops and implements MRI brain scan protocols and processing pipelines. Scans are being acquired for this purpose on the 1.5T and 3T scanners. Processing pipelines exist for volume quantification, Diffusion Tensor Imaging, brain iron-imaging, resting-state fMRI, BOLD fMRI, phase imaging.

Fondazione Santa Lucia is responsible for the fMRI part of the project with strong focus on the development of automatic algorithms to contour target volume using fMRI imaging. by the systematic assessment, exploration and visualization of images that will be used as basis for highly reliable visualizations and delineations of the radiation target volumes.

We are looking for two highly motivated young scientists preferably from European Countries interested in medical visualization and in the development of fMRI techniques development, implementation and analysis. Starting Dates for the position ESR is 1. January 2012 or later, position ER 2 starts 1. June 2013 or later. Duration ESR position is 36 month, and for ER position 18 month.
ESR Applicants should have a MSc in physics, biology, biomedical engineering, psychology, or equivalent, and should fulfil the requirements to register to a PhD.
They will be trained in pulse sequence programming and optimization for fMRI acquisition.

ER Applicants should have a PhD in physics, biomedical engineering or medical image computing (or equivalent research experience), plus knowledge of MRI physics and experience in high-level programming; a background in pulse sequence programming is desirable.

Applicants should have
§ Good programming skills in C++ and GPU programming
§  Basic knowledge in medical visualization and human computer interaction
§ Good knowledge of English in speaking and writing (English is working language of the ITN);
§ Tenacity in problem solving and willingness to learn
