We are interested in the cellular and network mechanisms underlying the dynamics of thalamocortical communication and sensory responses in the rodent whisker system. We use electrophysiology (whole-cell and extracellular recordings in vivo and in vitro) and imaging (two-photon calcium fluorescence in vivo). We also emphasize the development of quantitative data analysis and modelling techniques, tailored to the particular biological problem. Over the next few years, we will apply these approaches, together with optogenetic stimulation, to experiments in non-anesthetized mice. The specific combination of techniques will be adjusted to the successful candidate's interests and skills, but prior experience with at least some of them is an essential requirement.
The position is funded by a grant from the Spanish Ministry of Research and is for one year in the first instance (renewable). The successful candidate would also be eligible to apply, under our sponsorship, for a senior personal research fellowship from the Spanish government.
The Instituto de Neurociencias de Alicante (http://www.ina.umh.es) is a young and dynamic neuroscience research centre, with an active seminar program, strong intramural collaboration and substantial core facilities supporting our work. The Institute is situated close to the beach in a sunny location with affordable and convenient living conditions.
Enquiries should be directed to Miguel Maravall (mmaravall@umh.es); please include a CV and the names of two references. NOTE: interviews can be scheduled during the Society for Neuroscience meeting in Washington, D.C. Please indicate if you will be attending.
